This photo-drawing is part of a body of work titled Glimpses of Fiji. In 2014 I spent five months sailing around the Fijian Islands, meeting local people and discovering remote locations.
The piece pictures local children from a tiny remote village in Yasawa Island, drawn by hand using a graphic tablet. The original photograph is still visible as the gradient blue sky in the background.
Meeting these children deeply touched me. They have so little and yet they are so stubbornly joyful and full of energy, utilizing everything around them as a fun playground. In this artwork they are playing King of the Tree, trying to out-climb each other. One of the children is giving us a thumbs-up. Each time I look at him I feel he is telling me: “Everything’s okay, you got this!”
It’s an ideal piece of bright and fun art for someone who would love a daily reminder to always smile and look at the bright side of life.”
