This drawing is part of a body of work titled Glimpses of Fiji. In 2014 I spent five months sailing around the Fijian Islands, meeting local people and discovering remote locations.

The drawing is based on a photograph I took in the kitchen of my friend Pate. He is a taxi driver in Savusavu and has a big family. They invited me to their home for a roti making lesson and a wonderful vegetarian dinner. The artwork is of his wife, daughter and grandchildren doing the dishes, drawn by hand using a graphic tablet.

It is an important piece for me because I feel that Fijian Indians don’t get the credit they deserve. They comprise about half of the population and are very industrious peple and yet there is still a lot of discrimination and covert racism against them. Looking at the way Fiji is portrayed in advertising and social medai one would not know there are also Indians living there.
